Design 1 (Due: 2/22, 2pm)

Objectives

  • Practice conducting user and task analysis
  • Practice generating design sketches

Instructions

Part 1: Choosing a user population (10 points)

You are going to help a social group to design a website. The goal of the website is to support the tasks people in this social group often need to perform using traditional methods such as by hand and by pen and paper. The social group you choose to help must be a real-world social group. Some examples of social groups are sport teams, hobby clubs, church groups, support groups, non-profits, NGOs.

Ask around your friends and family members what social groups they are part of. Find a friend or family member who is willing to help you by becoming your subject. Conduct an informal interview with the friend or the family member to understand the particular social group. The objective of the interview is to obtain the information you need for user and task analysis.

In the write-up, indicate the name of the social group, a brief description of the group, the name of subject, and your relationship with the subject.

Part 2: Analyzing users (30 points)

Identify at least two unique user classes in the population you chose. Highlight their defining characteristics. Develop a persona for each user class.

Part 3: Analyzing tasks (30 points)

Identify one task often performed by each user class of this population that can be helped with a web-based application. Give the details of the task in terms of goals, preconditions and subtasks. Be as detailed as you can.

Part 4: Making design sketches (30 points)

For each task you identified in part 3, draw two different design sketches of the UI to support the task.
